There are lots of reason why a business fails – but one is particularly insidious. Failure that results from not being held accountable for your actions and their results is an unnecessary call to a futile end.

Recently, I was recently invited by three different investors to ‘take a look’ at companies that they had invested in. The pattern that I found was so strikingly similar that I set to thinking about what I was finding. I began to think about the roots of the pattern. The more I thought about it, the more I found myself staring at one of the principal reasons that only one in ten start-up companies make it to their fifth anniversary. Read the rest of this entry »

Commentary: It would be a good thing for the industry

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Before the dot-com boom and bust, the world of venture capital was much different.
Venture firms invested in technology companies for the long haul. They didn’t look at the initial public offering as their “exit.” Read the rest of this entry »

“What happened? We were doing so well – started out with such energy and focus. What has brought us to the very brink of disaster?”

I recently was asked to intervene in a situation that brought into focus one of the most common reasons why companies fail – the difference between knowing what has to be done and doing what has to be done. Read the rest of this entry »

“It seemed like such a good deal. We were getting funded and getting all this free advice to boot. Now the money is gone and the advice seems to have been less than useful.”

Over the years, I have developed a habit that has served me well. I calculate the cost of the meeting by adding up the value of each participant’s time, the cost of the facility and any materials used and then compare that with the value of what is being produced by the meeting. It is a crude measure, I will allow. However, it does add a certain reality check to the proceedings. Here are some examples: Read the rest of this entry »

To accumulate means that now there is more than before and then there will be more than now. It is a simple idea – then why do some people have so much trouble applying it to their lives?

Some years back I had a coaching engagement with a senior consultant. This person had risen to near the top of his profession and was, by most indicators, a thought leader in his field. After an increasingly successful career spanning almost twenty years, he began to wonder ‘what’s it all about’? Read the rest of this entry »

I’m not sure if it was because of Mr. Spock or Dr. Spock but there is a generation of managers and business leaders out there who seem to have great difficulty being human.

I was asked the other day what I thought about a particular person’s management style. Before I knew it, I had said “I have never seen him in a human relationship with any other person”. My friend – who had asked the question – was clearly taken aback. As I thought about it, so was I. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s such a simple idea – knowing what is going on around you. So why are people often so bad at it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I sometimes call it situational awareness – particularly when I am trying to teach somebody about what they have missed by paying less attention that was warranted. During one of my prior lives, I was forced to hone that capability to a fine edge. The trick is ‘being present in the present’ – meaning being involved and engaged in what is actually happening at the time. Read the rest of this entry »
Here is a simple prescription for killing the tendency of founders to produce hockey-stick financial projections. Base the valuation of their company on the money being invested and let them ‘earn in’ to the extent they actually meet those projections.
A recent phone conversation drifted into the question of valuation for start-up and early-stage companies. My own opinions on the matter have been formed through work with many such companies and on behalf of many investors in them. Read the rest of this entry »
It may be a strange question to ask – but why aren’t people more human? You would think it would help them to succeed – be in their own best interest.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today I had a very strange experience. I attended a networking event and found myself sitting in a corner talking to a long-time friend. He had his back to the crowd and I was able to watch over his shoulder. As I watched, something started to bother me about the scene. It took a while to nail it down but I finally figured it out. One person was ‘working the group’. A young CEO who had asked me to help him with his company was moving through the crowd. In the hour or so that I spent watching him, I realized that I never saw a truly human connection between the CEO and anybody in the room. Read the rest of this entry »

I recently wrote an article – The Essence of Leadership. In it I described two approaches to leadership. They were based on two recent conversations with ‘leaders’. Out of those conversations came two different approaches to answering the question ‘what makes you a leader’. Read the rest of this entry »
