“I marvel at how infrequently CEOs of emerging companies take advantage of this kind of opportunity … both for themselves and for their key people.” This statement captures it for me. In over ten years in technology sales organizations - both small and large – I saw found no teaching skills or fire in the CEOs that I knew. A few great sales managers taught and wanted to do some good but no CEO who seemed to see beyond the need to increase sales or cut costs. Perhaps someone would share additional examples of CEOs who are examples.

If more CEO's mentored more employees, just think of how much better some companies would run!

Dr. Smith,
again, more than a pleasure to read your article. "Inspiration' came to my mind (in a true sense). I agree that those people who have this ability and use it well do change the lifes around them. Over the years I had the pleasure of meeting such people. The difference they made to me, the lessons learned could not be matched by any theory or book. It might have been 'the right time - the right place' though these people took the time and shared something valuable. Be it a conversation in the context of a situation or coaching during a longer period. These are the kind of people that allow and facilitate the growth of others by opening the doors of the mind.

Dr Smith,

Another great quote I saw attributed to Plutarch indicates that this firelike attribute of the human mind has been known for a long time. However, the fact that he draws the remarkable contrast he does indicates that even in his day, the nature of the mind was misunderstood and maltreated by many...as it still is today.

The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but rather a fire to be ignited.

regards,
Rob
