I have coached many CEO and senior executives. Some of the patterns that I find at during the early stages of a new engagement are almost exact replicates of patterns that I found in prior engagements. One that occurs most frequently is lack clarity on how performance is measured. In many engagements, achieving this clarity comes first. Many of my leadership coaching engagements begin with a focus on the very definition of leadership. The younger CEOs tend to be confused about leadership – particularly if it is the first efforts to put together a team and build a company. For most of them, the definition that they have started with is something they took away from college – or worse, from TV and movies. Early on, it became clear to them that, although this approach to leadership makes for good entertainment, it is seriously lacking when it comes to building a business Continue reading “Leadership – Promoting Synergies” »

Many of my leadership coaching engagements focus on the challenges that expansion brings. Some of them come because of a new direction in corporate strategy. One of the most daunting of these shows up when I am in the process of building an Advisory Board for a company. Continue reading “Leadership Challenges – Advisory Boards” »

Executive Coaching, as the name suggests, is generally provided to business executives in the corporate environment. This usually takes the form of personal executive coaching on a one-to-one basis rather than working with larger corporate groups. Continue reading “Leadership Development – Executive Coaching” »

Many of my leadership coaching engagements begin with a leadership assessment. When done early on in the process, such an assessment provides a baseline against which we measure our progress. Once the engagement progresses, we run regular assessments in order to measure progress and identify fresh focus for our continued work. I have found leadership assessments one of the most effective and easily used tools in the leadership coaching toolbox. The leadership assessment process I offer is a cost effective, rapid turn-around way to help you to develop into a more effective leader by identifying your strengths and pinpointing opportunities for improvement. It will also help you to develop a strategic plan for correcting them. Continue reading “The Leadership Assessment Program – An Important Tool” »

I do a lot of executive coaching and my favorite focus is on leadership coaching. It is in this area that I have been able to help clients make the greatest changes – reap the biggest benefits. From a coach’s perspective, it has also been the source of the greatest satisfactions – to watch a client master their own tendencies and become a far better, more effective leader than they ever thought they could be. For most of today’s leaders, their success largely depends on their ability to persuade people, such as employees, other staff members, and even family members, to get things done. In order to be successful, in today’s tough corporate world, you must be proficient in the art of persuasion. You must convince others to take action on your behalf even when you have no formal authority! Continue reading “Leadership Persuasion” »

Every so often one of my coaching engagements comes to focus on an essential question – one so basic that I have to stop and marvel at its simplicity and clarity. That recently happened. I was in the early stages of working with a CEO who was having problems with his senior management team. In fact, this CEO had had a series of problems with a series of senior teams. So I decided to turn our discussion directly into the issue and put the question directly to him – let’s call him Bob[1] for convenience – “so, what makes you a leader that people should follow”? ‘Give a man a match and he will be warm for a day, set a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.’

Hidden deep within this adolescent obscenity lays a fundamental truth about the nature of leadership. The fire in this case is, of course, the fire of the mind. It can be kindled, for instance, when an individual first experiences how much they have to contribute to a team and, if they set very high standards for themselves, how excellent they can really be. These lessons learned are among the greatest gifts that any human being can give to another. Personally I mark these lessons learned and taught as among my greatest gifts received and finest contributions made. Continue reading “Leadership – The Fire of the Mind” »
